The repetitive and monotonous airplane directives from your friendly flight attendant instructing you to place your oxygen mask on your face before the person next to you, is Selfish! This instruction is meant to save you, as well as the person next to you, although not simultaneously.
The act of caring for yourself first is that of a selfish act. Although a seemingly dirty word, potentially due to the echoing voices of adults during childhood expressing “don’t be selfish” or “you’re being selfish.” There is immeasurable value to those around us and ourselves if we primarily focus on considering our own needs. This is not to say that we should always meet our needs before that of others, but it is the consideration of our needs that is important; to know when it is most important to meet our own needs before that of another’s, and action the necessary steps to meet those needs.
Consider your Self and benefit others.
